THE HISTORY
In 1945, the American Legion Post 76 constructed a wall, 120 feet long and 10 feet tall, at a site on Martin Luther King Boulevard (then 12th Street) and Carter Avenue in Ashland. The wall was titled Boyd County Heroes and contained the names of nearly 6,200 men and women from Boyd County who joined the military during World War II. The wall was constructed of wood and the names were hand-painted by W. B. Young, owner of Young Signs. The wall was dedicated on Memorial Day in 1944, with much fanfare and many military officials, dignitaries, public officials and citizens in attendance. After 10 years the wall was torn down in 1954 due to deterioration and lack of funding for its upkeep.
The original wall built in 1944.
