This wall is special. Most memorial walls carry the names of those who gave their life in battle or who received grievous wounds in battle that were not survivable. This wall is different because it contains the names of 6,175 men and women who left their homes in Boyd County, Kentucky, to fight for their country during World War II. There are 239 Gold Stars among them.
WE REMEMBER YOU.
This wall is a combination of historic preservation, community involvement and the wish to honor and memorialize the men and women who preserved freedom for the world…because they are heroes.
There is a story behind every name on this wall. They joined the Army, the Navy, the Marines, or the Coast Guard and they fought all over the globe in the places and battles we have studied and hear about like Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Wake Island, Battle of Midway, Guadalcanal, Nuremburg and Anzio. Most of these stories are now lost to history but the sacrifice, the bravery and commitment to freedom and liberty of these men and women will never be forgotten by the families of these heroes and the citizens of Ashland and Boyd County.
City of Ashland Commissioner, Josh Blanton, shows his son Elo a family member listed on the memorial during the dedication in 2024.
